Our speaker is Rebecca MacKinnon, an expert on Chinese internet censorship, internet freedom advocate, and currently a Senior Fellow at the New America Foundation. Ms. MacKinnon was Beijing Bureau Chief for CNN (1998-2001).and covered China for CNN for nine years.
Ms. MacKinnon will talk on China's system of internet control and examine common claims that social networking, blogs (e.g. Weibo), and other internet tools embraced by hundreds of millions of Chinese can serve as vehicles of popular empowerment. Ms. MacKinnon's first book,
Consent of the Networked: The Worldwide Struggle for Internet Freedom, will be published in
January 2012 (Basic Books). She is also co-founder of Global Voices Online (globalvoices.org), a global citizen media network.
The China Garden Rest\aurant is located at 1100 Wilson Blvd, a couple of blocks from the
Rosslyn Metro stop.
Free parking is available in the parking garage under the complex where the restaurant is located. Dinner is $16/person including tax and tip, but not drinks, which can be purchased separately. Per our usual policy, Mandarin Chinese should be spoken to the extent possible. Click
